Overview

Geometric counting turns diagrams into countable structures. Frequent AMC 8 patterns include counting rectangles in a grid, squares in all sizes, and lattice paths with restricted moves.

Key Ideas

  • Count by size class instead of one figure at a time.
  • For grids, separate counting of squares and rectangles.
  • Path counting often becomes a sequence of move choices.
  • Use symmetry to halve computation when the diagram is balanced.

Core Skills

Counting Rectangles in an m×nm\times n Grid

Choose 2 of the m+1m+1 horizontal lines and 2 of the n+1n+1 vertical lines:

(m+12)(n+12).\binom{m+1}{2}\binom{n+1}{2}.

Counting All Squares in an n×nn\times n Grid

Add contributions by side length:

12+22+⋯+n2.1^2 + 2^2 + \cdots + n^2.

Counting Monotone Paths

From (0,0)(0,0) to (a,b)(a,b) using only right/up moves, total paths are

(a+ba)=(a+bb).\binom{a+b}{a} = \binom{a+b}{b}.

Worked Example

How many rectangles are in a 2×32\times 3 grid?

(32)(42)=3⋅6=18.\binom{3}{2}\binom{4}{2}=3\cdot6=18.

So the grid contains 18\boxed{18} rectangles.
