Overview

Angle chasing is the process of deducing unknown angles from given ones using geometric relationships. When a transversal crosses parallel lines, it creates a predictable set of equal and supplementary angle pairs. Mastering these patterns is essential for AMC 8 geometry.

Key Ideas

  • Vertical angles are equal.
  • Supplementary angles sum to 180°180°.
  • When a transversal crosses parallel lines:
    • Alternate interior angles are equal.
    • Corresponding angles are equal.
    • Co-interior (same-side interior) angles are supplementary.
  • The angles in a triangle sum to 180°180°.

Core Skills

Identifying Angle Pairs

Angle pairs will be present at any given figure. Identifying angle pairs is crucial as it allows us to make various deductions about the properties of the figure and allows us to even coclude seemingly surprising things, such as a quadrilateral can be enclosed within a circle or 2 seemngly different figures being the same thing in terms of length of sides and angles(We will cover these concepts later!).

Identifying them is simple: You just observe what relations they have. In fact the process of finding angle pairs and making findings out of them itself is known as Angle Chasing and it is a key intermediate step in many geometry problems wich is dcussed below.

Multi-Step Angle Chasing

Using one known angle to find the next, then the next, chaining relationships across the figure in a careful meticulous manner is known as angle chasing. And then using those relationships to obtain useful relationships. Angle chasing is done by applying multiple properties or theorems(This will be discussed later once again). Now we will dicuss some basic theorems and properties.

Angle on a line

All angles that lie on a line will always add to 180°180\degree. Whenever we have a pair of angles adding up to 180°180\degree, they are known as supplemetary angles. Right now this may seem trivial but it is crucial as a foundation for other more complex theorems.

Angles in line intersections

Whenever we have two lines intersecting each other, the angle opposite to one angle is equal. We call these Vertically opposite angles.

Finally if there are 2 lines which are parallel to each other, and a line is cutting through them, it is known as a transversal. If the angles are on both the lines are same, they are known as corresponding angles. If they lie on the interior side of the line and we take the vertically opposite angle of the exterior correponding angle, they are known as alternate interior angles. Similarly we define alternate exterior angles.

Angles in a triangle

The angles in a triangle always add to 180°180\degree

Worked Example

Question

Prove that the angles in a triangle add to 180°180\degree

Proof

Let there be a triangle with 1 parallel line as shown below (These parallel lines are known as auxillary lines, which will be covered later) as below Angles in a triangle Now observe that BCBC and ABAB are transversals.

Hence we can take the alternate interior angles to get ∠CBE=c°\angle CBE = c \degree and ∠ABD=a°\angle ABD = a \degree. Observe that ∠ABC\angle ABC, ∠CBE\angle CBE and ∠ABD\angle ABD all lie on a line. Hence:

∠ABC+∠CBE+∠ABD=180°  ⟹  a°+b°+c°=180°\angle ABC+\angle CBE+\angle ABD = 180\degree \implies \boxed{a\degree +b\degree+c\degree = 180\degree }
